All-Inclusive Tips

What's actually included at a Sandals resort (and what isn't)

Sandals all-inclusive resort pool and beach — what's included guide

Quick Answer

Sandals is genuinely all-inclusive — more so than most resorts that use the label. Meals, premium spirits, water sports (including scuba for certified divers), tips, taxes, airport transfers, and nightly entertainment are all in the price. What's NOT included: spa treatments, off-resort excursions, professional photo packages, and private events. Here's the complete list.

My vacation planning service is 100% free to you — you pay the same price as booking direct.

What "Luxury-Included" actually means at Sandals

Most all-inclusive resorts use the term loosely. Beer and well liquor are "included." A couple of buffet restaurants are "included." But crack open the fine print and you'll find resort fees, gratuity charges, and premium upgrade costs hiding everywhere.

Sandals uses the term "luxury-included" deliberately — and it means something different. Premium spirits are included. All restaurants, including specialty dining, are included with no reservation fees. All gratuities are included — you never tip anyone on the resort (with narrow exceptions I'll cover below). Resort fees don't exist at Sandals. The price you're quoted is the price you pay.

When you land in Jamaica, St. Lucia, or Barbados, a Sandals representative meets you at the airport. A shared van takes you to the resort. Your check-in is handled. From the moment you land until you're back at the airport, Sandals has covered it. That's what luxury-included actually means.

Mark's Take

I've compared Sandals side-by-side with a lot of "all-inclusive" competitors, and the difference is real. The standard AI model is beer, wine, and well liquor. Sandals serves Robert Mondavi wines by the bottle, Woodford Reserve, Grey Goose, premium rums — all included. When my clients come back from their first Sandals trip, the thing they mention most is that they never once had to reach for their wallet.

Everything that IS included — the full list

Here's what's in your Sandals rate:

  • All accommodations — including a stocked minibar refreshed daily, even in base room categories
  • All meals — every restaurant, every meal period, unlimited, with no reservation surcharges at most dining venues
  • All drinks — including top-shelf liquor (Woodford Reserve, Grey Goose, Don Julio), 6 varietals of Robert Mondavi wine, domestic and imported beer, cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, 24/7
  • Non-motorized water sports — snorkeling gear, kayaking, paddleboarding, Hobie Cats, glass-bottom kayaks
  • Motorized water sports — water skiing, glass-bottom boats (availability varies by resort and room category)
  • Scuba diving for certified divers — up to 2 boat dives per day plus all equipment. At market rates this is worth $600–$900+ per couple for a week
  • Nightly entertainment — live bands, theme nights, shows, fire dancers depending on property
  • All taxes and gratuities — no tip jars, no suggested gratuity on receipts, no checkout surprises
  • Airport transfers — roundtrip from arrival airport to resort (shared van)
  • Green fees at golf resorts — including shuttle to the course
  • Access to sister resorts — Stay-at-One, Play-at-Two or Three (where applicable)
  • Fitness center access
  • Red Lane Spa facility access — steam room, sauna, relaxation areas (treatments are extra)

The things that surprise people (also included)

Most first-time Sandals guests are surprised by a few of these:

  • Scuba diving — I say this twice because people genuinely don't believe it until they check in and are handed a dive schedule. Included for certified divers. Full stop.
  • Both-direction airport transfers — some guests assume only one direction is covered. Both your arrival and departure transfers are included.
  • Minibar stocked daily — not just a few bottles on arrival. Daily restocking is standard across most room categories.
  • No resort fees anywhere — this catches people off guard because virtually every major resort brand in the Caribbean has adopted resort fees in the last few years. Sandals has not.
  • Room service — available at select room categories, not property-wide, but far more included than you might assume.

Mark's Pro Tip

The scuba inclusion is the most undervalued thing in Caribbean travel. If you're a certified diver, the diving value alone can justify the Sandals rate compared to a standard resort where you'd be paying $100–150+ per person per dive plus equipment rental. Get certified before your trip if you're remotely interested — PADI certification is achievable in about a week.

What's NOT included — the vacation extras

Sandals is transparent about this. The things that cost extra:

  • Spa treatments — Red Lane Spa facility access (steam, sauna, relaxation) is free. Actual treatments — massages, facials, body wraps, nail services — are extra and priced at standard spa rates
  • Off-resort excursions — hiking the Pitons in St. Lucia, zip-lining, market tours, city excursions, rum distillery tours. These are booked through the resort's excursion desk or independently, and you pay separately
  • Professional photography packages — an on-site photographer is available at most properties; packages are extra
  • Private candlelight beach dinners — romance add-ons like private dinners on the beach, in-room rose petal setups, and similar arrangements are available for an additional cost
  • Premium wine list — 6 Robert Mondavi varietals are included standard. The Manager's Wine List features premium bottles available for an upcharge
  • Wedding packages beyond the base program — Sandals offers complimentary wedding packages that meet basic needs. Upgraded florals, premium photography, larger reception setups cost extra
  • Golf caddy (mandatory) and cart rental (optional) — green fees and transfers to the course are included, but caddies are required and not included. Golf carts, club rentals, and shoe rentals are also extra
  • Sunset catamaran cruises — these are a popular add-on available at select properties but come at an additional cost
  • Your flights and travel insurance — always out-of-pocket, same as any resort

Butler suites: a different level of service

Select room categories at Sandals include Butler Elite service — a dedicated personal butler assigned to you for the duration of your stay. This isn't a bellhop who carries your bags once. Your butler:

  • Makes restaurant reservations and escorts you to your table
  • Unpacks your luggage on arrival (and repacks on departure if requested)
  • Runs a bath, sets up in-room dining, arranges beach setup with preferred chairs and umbrellas
  • Brings food and drinks to your pool lounger or on the beach
  • Handles any requests throughout your stay — a beach fire, a surprise dessert setup, whatever you need

Butler suites also come with premium airport transfers — a private car instead of the shared van, with your butler meeting you at the airport. It's a different arrival experience.

One important note: tipping your butler is appropriate and expected. Butlers are the exception to Sandals' no-tipping policy. $20–$50 per day is the standard range depending on the level of service and your length of stay.

Mark's Take

Butler service changes the entire resort experience. It's not just a nice perk — it transforms how you interact with the resort from the moment you arrive. For a honeymoon, milestone anniversary, or any trip where the experience matters more than the budget, the butler category is worth budgeting for. My clients who've done it rarely go back to standard rooms at Sandals.

The Stay-at-One, Play-at-Two/Three perk explained

At destinations with multiple Sandals properties — most notably St. Lucia — your booking grants you access to sister resorts. You're not confined to your own property.

In St. Lucia, three Sandals resorts sit within reach: Sandals Grande St. Lucian, Sandals Regency La Toc, and Sandals Halcyon Beach. Book any one, and you can dine at, use the pools at, and enjoy the beaches of all three. The combined restaurant count across the three St. Lucia properties is 30+. For a 7-night stay, that's meaningful variety.

In Jamaica, several campuses offer this exchange depending on your specific resort. Your travel advisor will clarify which sister properties are included with your booking.

In Barbados, Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Barbados sit adjacent on the same stretch of beach and operate as a shared campus — giving you access to 21 restaurants between the two.

Mark's Take

For my St. Lucia clients, the Play-at-Three perk is one of the biggest selling points — and one of the most underestimated. You're not eating at the same handful of restaurants for a week. You're exploring 30+ restaurants across three resorts, each with a distinct personality. Guests at Halcyon Beach (the most intimate, best-value St. Lucia option) get the same play-at-three access as guests at Grande St. Lucian.

Is there tipping at Sandals?

The official Sandals policy is no tipping anywhere on property. There are no tip jars at the bar. No suggested gratuity lines on your receipt. The staff is compensated in a tip-free structure, and the culture genuinely reflects this — you won't feel pressure to tip anyone at the restaurant, bar, or concierge desk.

The exceptions:

  • Butler suites — your personal butler should be tipped. $20–$50 per day is standard and appropriate
  • Red Lane Spa treatments — tip as you would at any spa; 15–20% is appropriate
  • Off-resort excursion guides and drivers — tip as you would locally; these are not Sandals employees

Mark's "worth it" extras vs. skip list

Just because something is available for purchase doesn't mean it's worth buying. Here's my honest take after booking hundreds of Sandals trips:

Extra Worth It? Mark's Note
Couples massage at Red Lane Spa Yes Romantic, Red Lane is well-run. Book it for day 2 or 3 when you've settled in.
Off-resort excursion (Pitons hike, St. Lucia) Yes Hiking the Pitons is a life experience. Worth every dollar.
Private beach candlelight dinner For milestone trips Honeymoon or anniversary? Worth it. Regular trip? The included dining is excellent enough.
Butler suite upgrade For special occasions Transformative experience. If the budget allows on a meaningful trip, do it.
Professional photography package Usually skip Modern phone cameras are exceptional. The packages are expensive and rarely justified.
Premium wine list bottles Skip The 6 included Robert Mondavi varietals are genuinely good. The upgrade isn't worth the jump in price.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sandals truly all-inclusive?

More genuinely than almost any other resort brand — yes. Sandals includes premium spirits, all restaurants, water sports, scuba diving for certified divers, airport transfers, taxes, and gratuities. There are no hidden resort fees.

Do I need cash at a Sandals resort?

Almost never on-resort. The only times you'll need cash or a credit card: spa treatments, off-resort excursions, butler tips (if in a butler suite), and any premium items off the standard menu.

Is scuba diving really included at Sandals?

Yes — for certified divers, up to 2 boat dives per day plus all equipment are included. At non-Sandals rates, this would cost $600–$900+ per couple for a week. It's one of the most underappreciated inclusions in all-inclusive travel.

What's the Red Lane Spa at Sandals?

The Red Lane Spa is Sandals' on-site spa brand. Facility use (steam, sauna, relaxation areas) is included in your stay. Individual treatments — massages, facials, body wraps — are extra and priced separately.

Are there resort fees at Sandals?

No. Sandals does not charge resort fees of any kind. All taxes and gratuities are included in your quoted rate. The price you see is the price you pay — no surprises at checkout.

Can I leave the resort during my Sandals stay?

Yes — you're free to leave anytime. Off-resort excursions are common and highly recommended in destinations like St. Lucia (Pitons hike) and Barbados. Just book them through the resort or independently.
